A Bitterroot Valley and Hamilton icon for over a century, the Tammany Castle story has been passed down through generations and is one that continues to delight. We’ll begin by sharing this piece of history so you can fully appreciate its intrigue to this day.

Marcus Daly, copper baron and founding father of Hamilton and the Anaconda Copper Mining Corporation, enjoyed a passion for raising thoroughbreds for the track. One particular steed called Tammany became a promising national contender, and being a competitive fellow Daly was more than ready to accept a contest between Tammany and East Coast favorite Lamplighter. Daly was reported to have promised Tammany a “castle” if he won, and making good on that promise the Tammany Stables were constructed in his honor after the 1893 win. Complete with huge, heated stalls a barn of such sorts would be a luxury by today’s standards and was certainly an extravagance in that era. An upper level over the enormous stalls was used by the jockeys as their headquarters and poker room.

For the next 100 years the structure remained a part of the Daly estate, however had long since been utilized for equine or any other function. The current owner’s vision of restoring the stables into an elegant residence was realized in 2008. The 5,400+/- square foot interior space has been converted into two massive bedroom suites, beautiful kitchen, memorabilia den and portico transformed into a gallery living and dining space with wet bar and utility room on the main level. The upper level showcases two bedroom/bathroom suites, each with bed positioned directly under the cupolas of the roof. Amazingly much of the original wood, doors, windows and staircase were incorporated into the renovation. All interior stall doors have been lovingly restored to a beautiful wood finish with original copper hardware polished to a shine. The concrete covered arched brick ceilings have over a mile of railroad track incorporated into the design, a tribute to the spur line of the Burlington Northern railroad Daly owned. Though the stable’s dirt and gravel floors were suitable for its original inhabitants, the current owners chose to install cork flooring, imitating another horse barn on the original Daly Estate, cork, of course, being used to pamper the horses’ feet. On the master bathroom floor and countertops are French limestone. Between the fixtures, furnishings and equipment the true essence of the era remain intact. Patios and gardens outline the perimeter of the home.

Situated on a quiet knob, the grounds are lush and green and incorporate about 12 acres contained within white fencing. The paved drive is lined with maturing deciduous trees, and a combination of new and native landscaping brings a natural beauty to the acreage.

On the outskirts of Hamilton, Tammany Castle is located in a perfect location to experience all the recreational benefits enjoyed in the Bitterroot Valley. Trailheads into the Bitterroot National Forest are abundant and in close proximity to the property. Here can be enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, big game archery and rifle hunting, four-wheel exploration and in winter, snowmobiling. The Bitterroot River is a blue-ribbon trout stream famed for great fly-fishing. Three renowned downhill ski areas are each within an hour’s drive and two recreational lakes in the southern Bitterroot Valley provide water sporting opportunities. The acreage is near a municipal golf course as well as right near the entrance to the members-only Stock Farm Club owned by Charles Schwab. For more urban pleasures, Hamilton is highlighted by eclectic shopping experiences, wonderful eateries and pubs and offers medical and professional services and a small jetport for private aircraft located under five minutes from the property. Missoula, the largest city in western Montana, is just 45 miles to the north and features a full array of services and entertainment options and has commercial flights available daily through an international airport.
